The Military Construction portion of the bill includes $336 million in new funding for quality of life programs for troops and their families, much of which is targeted towards barracks and medical facilities. It also sends $3.2 billion specifically towards military housing. The bill awaits Senate action. With the Senate on recess until September, we will not see any movement for a while. Once the Senate passes its version of the funding bill, the differences would need to be resolved before being sent to the President. New Housing Bill has Vet Provisions: The housing and economic recovery legislation that was recently signed into law (PL 110-289) includes several VFW-supported provisions designed to safeguard servicemembers and veterans during the mortgage and foreclosure crisis.  3. House Passes Vet Bills: The House passed eight veteran-related bills covering a wide array of benefits. Several of the bills will provide new protections for servicemembers who have or are in the process of being deployed. One such bill is HR 6225, The Improving SCRA and USERRA Protections Act of 2008. Provisions include requiring judges to give veterans a hearing when they are seeking to regain a job lost during deployment and allowing servicemembers to terminate contracts if they are notified of deployment. It also lets them continue education benefits where they left off prior to active duty.  4. Congress on August Recess: Congress heads out of town with many items left on the agenda including VA funding and the Defense Authorization bill. Now is the perfect time to visit their local offices and talk about issues important to veterans and the VFW. Remember all of the House members are up for re-election in November so they should be willing and eager to visit with you. When making an appointment make sure you arrive promptly and come prepared to discuss your issues. It is best to stick to one or two specific items and give examples of why you (VFW) support these issues. Always thank them and remind them that you expect them to do the right thing for America’s veterans and servicemembers. WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Senate’s passage of S. 2617, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2008, last night by unanimous consent.
“I commend my colleagues for passing the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2008. Many veterans and their survivors count on these monthly payments to get by, and in these hard times, we must not allow rising costs to eat away at their spending power. For veterans and their survivors who rely on their compensation, including nearly 18,000 served by VA’s regional office in my home state of Hawaii, this COLA is the least we can do,†said Akaka.
S. 2617, introduced by Senator Akaka, will adjust veterans’ compensation rates to keep pace with inflation, effective December 1, 2008. According to recent data provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs, this increase will go to 2.8 million veterans and over 300,000 surviving spouses receiving dependency and indemnity compensation.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for their consideration. While this year’s cost-of-living increase has yet to be determined, the Congressional Budget Office has projected a 2.8 percent increase. Last year’s increase was 2.3 percent.

VA Partners With “Monster” for Jobs

WASHINGTON – In a new plan to help veterans find jobs, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has partnered with Monster Government Solutions, a division of Monster Worldwide, Inc., a company that markets online employment services to employers and job seekers.
Part of VA’s mission is to assist veterans to gain employment. Monster, in partnership with VA’s Center for Veterans Enterprise, provides veteran-owned small businesses the opportunity to post job openings for veterans, including service-disabled veterans, at a large price discount. Monster will post the job openings for 60 days, twice as long as for other employers.
“This government-corporate partnership represents the best kind of effort to help those who gave up time in their lives to serve their country and return to an economic community that may not recognize their skills,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. “The program should make it easier for employers to find qualified job candidates as well as veteran suppliers and service contractors.”
To participate in Monster job listings, veteran business owners must be listed in VA’s online Vendor Information Pages (VIP) maintained by the Department’s Center for Veterans Enterprise at http://www.VetBiz.gov.
In addition to helping veteran owners get business from other companies and prospective veteran employees find jobs, VA’s VIP pages will give Monster a source for purchasing services itself and VA will refer appropriate, listed suppliers to Monster.
The VA-Monster agreement is initially for two years and provides for extensions.
